GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Pathology Clinical Lab Assistant II is responsible for the Registration and Insurance Verification of specimens received by MGPO Dermatopathology Associates; the Accessioning of specimens according to approved protocols; the filing of pathology slides; and performs other laboratory related tasks.
The Clinical Lab Assistant II works independently under direct supervision and performs clerical and technical functions required for core front-end Dermatopathology Laboratory operations.
The Pathology Clinical Lab Assistant II also assists in supporting client services activities.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESRegistration of patients for all dermatopathology services provided at 2 Wells Avenue.
Registration includes insurance verification of patients within EPIC or other resources and the provision of a Medical Record Number using EPIC.
Registration includes the accurate input of patient demographic and insurance information.
This position acts independently to obtain missing essential data for specimen processing and billing.
The Clinical Lab Assistant II will contact clients to obtain essential specimen and/or patient information.
Client calls need to be limited and organized and request for information will be collected and pursued in a service oriented and efficient manner.
Specimens cannot be processed without essential information and billing cannot be accomplished without correct patient demographic and insurance information.
Client contact is conducted according to detailed SOPs, understanding the client has lab service options with less stringent information requirements.
After registration and insurance verification are complete, the Clinical Lab Assistant II accessions specimens according to approved protocol.
This process varies by type of specimen received (slides, blocks, tissue) and includes the creation and printing of bar code labels and casettes for specimen tracking.
Accessioning includes the careful evaluation of hand-written requisition slips and close attention to detail.
All material must be proof-read to verify accuracy and quality control responsibilities include the proofing of registration and accession materials generated by coworkers and self audit.
The Clinical Lab Assistant II will be responsible for the orientation and training of new registration and accessioning personnel.
The Clinical Lab Assistant II will be responsible for the distribution of specimens to appropriate locations as well as the packaging and tracking of consult slides and/or blocks to originating provider, ensuring HIPAA guidelines are followed.
The Clinical Lab Assistant II will scan requisitions and participate in billing inquiries as requested.
Answers telephone and helps troubleshoot registration and insurance issues to support proper billing.
This task supports incoming calls and inquiries.
The filing of slides and blocks for proper storage includes scanning all slides into storage and the meticulous maintenance and day to day practice of slide storage by case number and year.
The return of consult slides and blocks after signout, including the documentation of returns within Copath.
Assists laboratory supervisor with inventory and supply management, as requested.
May prepare folders, file reports, label and file slides and perform other clerical duties as time permits.
The Clinical Lab Assistant II performs special projects and responsibilities.
